Iron Gate

Toured an old gold mine in North Georgia. This iron door and window grate was brought from London. It is hard to read the plaque (which was hung above the gate) in the picture, but this is what it says:

“Dungeon door and ventilation grills from Old Newgate Prison, London, Eng. Built 1218- abandoned 1902- torn down in 1903. Many American Seamen captured during the Revolutionary War were confined there, and those condemned to death had to pass through this door.”  Day 184/365.
